HIGHLIGHTS
- Other DTH providers such as Tata Sky, Airtel Digital TV offering 100 channels for Rs 154
- Sun Direct wants to stay competitive in the DTH industry
Sun Direct, which is the smallest player out of all the other DTH players involving, Tata Sky and D2h has introduced a surprising change to its plans which has probably impressed the subscribers of the DTH provider. Sun Direct has announced that it will provide all its channels at a network charge fees of Rs 154, this is contrary to other DTH providers who are offering only 100 channels for Rs 154. If not for this new change in its pricing, Sun Direct could have charged up to Rs 1.25 per channel over the base pack and up to Rs 2.5 per HD channel over the necessary fee. It is likely that Sun Direct has introduced this new pricing for its channels to remain competitive in the Tamil Cable market, which is one of the most competitive ones.
Subscribers should note that this base pack fee of Rs 154 will be exclusive of content charges which are relayed on pay channels. However, for consumers who mainly watch free-to-air channels, this move will make the most difference as they will be able to watch all channels from Sun Direct in just Rs 154. In comparison, subscribers of other DTH services will have to pay around Rs 210 to watch 150 channels, whereas subscribers of Sun Direct will have to pay Rs 154 only. This news is reported by Ultra News.
Sun Direct Customers to Enjoy Cheaper Pay Channels
To understand a clear picture of what this new waiver of additional network charges by Sun Direct look like, we will have to understand that if a subscriber wants to watch a pay channel in addition to the 100 channels in his or her base pack under some other DTH provider then they will have to pay the content charges which are charged by the channel owners along with the network fees for additional channels. However, for Sun Direct subscribers, if they want to watch five other channels over their base pack, they will only have to pay the content charges for these five channels on top of the Rs 154 base pack price, and they won’t have to pay the network charges for these five channels.
Sun TV to Not Provide Discount on Content Charges for Its Own Channels
Previously, there were speculations that Sun Direct would offer a discount on the content charges of channels relayed by Sun TV. However, the DTH provider has decided against this move. But, if Sun Direct were to provide these channels on a discounted rate or even for free, then it would have been a big attraction for the subscribers in the southern region. Currently, Sun TV owns 35 channels which come at the price of Rs 22.40 in the form of content charges per month.
Sun Direct is one of India’s top HD channels provider although its SD portfolio is largely oriented towards South Indian audiences. The provider offers 300 channel including 68 channels. Out of the total 300 channels, around 150 channels are free-to-air while other channels come with content charges.
